Here are some more sketches of some Alexander McQueen dresses (because they're pretty:). I was trying to work on measuring and exact proportions, etc., since I've done caricatures for such a long time and worked with EXAGGERATION of shapes, measurements, proportions, etc. Sometimes I wonder if I can still draw a portrait correctly without caricaturing.

These are two bookmarks I made for a friend of mine who just got married. She and her husband are going to be missionaries in Bangladesh in about a year! Since they won't have a lot of space for large things like furniture, they didn't want them as gifts. This worked out nicely for me because I can't afford a couch or bookshelves anyway. So I took a couple verses from Isaiah and put them on some cut out watercolor paper. I actually thought of the design first, and put it on before I wrote the verses.

Baby Shower Hedgehog

A friend's daughter was about to have a baby girl and she had a party thrown for her. So, since I was short on money, I drew this cartoon hedgehog for her and sewed it onto a bookmark, because she loves to read. This is actually about twice the size of the original. It is colored pencil and pen on paper.

This is a card I did for my brother up at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. The Mustang is the school's mascot. And the little buildings in the distance are where my brother lives--they actually painted them almost those exact colors.

So this one is already on my facebook, but just for you guys, I'm posting it here too! This was done the last day of my portrait class at Studio 2nd Street. You can see some of my teacher's examples on the left of the canvas. This is also one of my Dad's favorites. Mine too, for that matter. It is a mixture of Cadmium Red, Yellow Ochre and Ivory Black with white to make a grayscale oil painting.

Wedding Card

There seem to be an endless string of weddings I've been invited to lately. This is a marvelous thing, of course---personally, it stretches my creativity in deciding what to draw/make for the couples. This was a card for Brooke and her fiance; it is not intended to be them. It was two different pictures that I put together to make it look wedding-ish. I added the flowers and veil to the girl who was actually a Vera Wang model.

This is the last painting of the plein air class. Most of it took 3 hours, but I took it home and finished the features and cleaned up some lines.

One person said the tree was too smooth. Another person said the features were too faint. I think the arms might be disproportionate.

Always more to learn and shoot for.

Cardiff by the Sea Plein Air

This was the second week at Cardiff by the Sea for my plein air class. Since the weather was so different than the week before, the teacher had us begin a new painting with the model instead of working over the one we had finished.

This took about 3 hours in oil.

Size is around 11x14 in.

Zorn Palette

I have been wanting to try out the Zorn palette for several years, but never got around to it. But a few weeks ago I had some free time and a stormy day so I painted my backyard. The telephone pole and wires and houses were edited out, so basically, this is completely made up. HAH!

It took about 2 hours.

The palette is a blue black, cadmium red, yellow ochre, and white: all oils.

Instead of working primarily with chroma, using the Zorn palette is more of a study of dark and light.

The Horrors of Proportion

I have a book on fashion which is full of great full body pictures perfect for practicing proportion. Yet it is ridiculously hard to try and take a picture and enlarge it or diminish it to a random size, freehand. And then, with clothes on, it's even harder to see body measurements.

What I want to learn is how the masters would get pictures of large groups of people, clothed or unclothed, close or far away, and get their proportions exactly on the canvas; not to mention the other difficulties of composition, color, execution, etc.

Landscape with a Figure

In the second course of oil painting lessons, I took a class that taught how to put a figure into a landscape. One week, we went to the location and painted the scene, and the next week, a model was brought in and we put him/her into the picture. The main difficulty is painting the model so it looks like he/she was painted the same day. This was done at the Leo Carillo ranch, with some help from my teacher.

Well, it fell through at the time, but lately I got my old sketch books out again and refurbished the characters to send to a friend recovering from surgery. This is the only one I've taken a picture of so far, because he's my favorite. He doesn't actually have a name yet. But that's ok.

These two are two recently married folks from my church. He works at Inn n Out and is a nurse assistant, and she is an RN. Her mom commissioned me to do this and gave me lots of freedom concerning the background and activity, etc. The girl is the sister of the guy in the other black and white caricature I did which I don't know how to link with this one hah!

The lamp was a lesson in painting light, and the ram head/god/figurine thing was a lesson in painting complimentary colors.

The lamp painting was the first one where I got as far as covering the whole surface instead of leaving parts white. On the second one, I got as far as adding a little detail, which my teacher helped me with.

Oil Painting Class in Encinitas

I haven't posted very much in a while for a very good reason--an oil painting class.

Up in Encinitas, Ron Lemen teaches at Studio 2nd Street. He's very good at teaching because I have learned A LOT.

At first, I tried using the oils as watercolors: diluting them with thinner and leaving out the white. Ron quickly told me how it was really done. The first painting was his exercise for me to learn about painting thickly and opaquely. Knowing myself and how I do best in extremes, I went straight in and globbed on the paint as thick as I could. It felt sinful using all that material at once, but it taught me a valuable lesson. Now I don't even use thinner.

The second painting is a couple weeks later: still learning about dark to light, composition, color, light, etc. In fact, I still am learning about them--haha--but the difficulties are more subtle now, thank the Lord!

I will post some of the other paintings soon....

At SeaWorld, there is a little first aid area in case of emergencies, and I used to go there frequently for sunscreen for my bright bright skin. Haha. One of the nurses there, Laura, discovered that I do caricatures and commissioned me to draw her dog. I found out that I prefer my caricatures to be design-based/cartoony rather than exaggerated with every detail as some of the greats do. That's what I went for on this sketch: very simple, but catching the dog's essence.

After about 2 years at New Life Presbyterian, I finally took a shot at a finalized caricature version of my pastor. Here he is in black and white (with a ballpoint pen) and then in color (with watercolor).

I still haven't shown him yet. But my family laughed when I showed them. Maybe I'll post an update on his reaction.

New Baby Boy!

For a while I had an art student named Rachel. She stopped doing lessons because her family moved a little further north. Right before they left though, her mom had a little baby boy! His name is Erich Matthew Williamson. I went to the baby shower, and since I had no money, I did a painting for him instead. It was finished in about 3 hours, I think, in acrylic.

Speech and Debate Nationals

These cool people are the Snyders. Jon Snyder was the one who first told me that one of the things I needed to do to be a great artist was to draw stuff I didn't like. That meant trying my hand at drawing cars and electronics and landscapes and things I didn't want to waste my time with. It was good advice. I still use it all the time.

This was so much fun because Jon gave me a whole album of pictures to use and the only guidelines were to have the right colors and do a wedding theme. Although it took a lot of tweaking and reworking, the exercise stretched me and I'm quite pleased with the result.

I was listening to Simon and Garfunkel's music on YouTube, and instead of staring at the screen like I usually do, I decided to start another tab and draw some sketches of them while their music was inspiring me. Simon kind of looks like Spock during his earlier years. Those sketches didn't turn out as good. So I give you....Art! Art of Art!

Table for a Nursery

I got commissioned to paint a kids' table for a nursery! I used acrylic oops paint from Home Depot. One of the ladies at church took care of all those little details like getting the paint and prepping the wood, etc. I was quite pleased with how quickly I did it (for me). All in all it took 32 hours, working a couple days a week for about 4-6 weeks. I have the right info somewhere....

I've been missing drawing people, caricatures or otherwise, and hope to post some more of those soon.

Commission Caricature

Today I just finished this piece for my sister's landlady. It is a caricature of Carl and Leann Albrecht--Leann sings and Carl plays the drums, obviously. I was quite happy with the way it came out, especially all the details like the drum and guitar heads and hands in the front.

I asked the lady if she wanted anything on the drum. She said that Carl was in the habit of saying "Peace" at the end of his facebook statuses (sp?), so it worked out perfectly: I took the font for Pearl drums and put "Peace" on the drum instead. It's a little wonky, but it's a start.

Ooh ooh, another cool fact: I looked up the music notes for drums, vocals, and guitar, and put them strategically near their origins in the picture. That was for the music buffs out there.

Back to SeaWorld for Easter!

About a week ago I returned to my old stomping grounds at SeaWorld. It was very odd to be back at first, but after a couple hideous demos, I was back in the swing of things. This time I was working specifically on speed, and it worked very well. I was still happy with my drawings though, and the customers were happy with the speed.

This drawing was one for my co-worker, Marco, of his friend. He's supposed to be at a club.

"Eomer" Beginning in Primaries

This was a divinely inspired piece because it just popped into my head! I love how primary colors jump out at you and simplify a picture, and how so few colors tell so much.

This piece is done in Acrylic on a small canvas, but greatly inspired by watercolor. After putting a warm wash over the background, I sketched Eomer's face onto the canvas with pencil to get proportions and shapes. Then, I put straight primary colors (plus white) onto the canvas in places where I thought they would do the most good.

With the background I did the same thing, adding equal amounts of white to each color to push it out of the foreground and make it hazy and indistinct. On the front, I washed only primary colors over each area according to what hue I wanted it to be. I thought it gave the colors a pretty rich look, but that's an artist looking at her own work, so I'm probably biased. What do you think?

Unfortunately, the picture of the finished painting is a little off, too.

Here's a sketch of Elijah Wood as Frodo from Lord of the Rings. I was really into those movies/books when they came out and I bought up everything there was to do with them. So I have plenty reference material for the characters.

This is done in colored pencil: watercolor pencils, actually, without the water. I'm trying to keep myself drawing since I'm not as busy at SeaWorld. Also, I kind of need to re-learn my portrait-drawing skills.

Aaaand I'm back from my very first caricature convention--and I had a FANTASTIC time! The best thing about it was that I could take as little or as much time as I wanted on all my drawings. And I got to try out some watercolor. Oh, and I got to see 200 odd artists create artwork. Oh, and I got to try out the speed competition---which was SOOO fun!!! And I got to meet four MAD artists. And I got to fly for the first time! Apologies for the blurry pictures. Hey, I'm an artist, not a photographer.

Due to some requests to see caricatures of me, I decided to throw some together for your viewing pleasure! These four are from my co-workers at SeaWorld, done at various times.

The sitting one was sketched by good 'ol Manny, who is now shaking it up at CalArts.

Brian Morante drew me throwing pies at Shamu--I laughed a long time on that one.

The head-shot was given to me by bomb-dur Nate who helped teach me how to jack faces. Hur hur.

Explanation: One of my co-workers borrowed my dark brown the day before I drew this--and hadn't given it back. So, I was mixing the coffee brown with the burgundy to try to get that dark feel to Aaron's hair. This is the result.

He said he had been drawn by Nate, who drew him all hunched over, so he's been all self-conscious about his posture. So I drew him sitting up straight. Sort of.

For Father's Day

This drawing combined some of the strangest themes that could be. The first kid wanted a batman, then the next guy wanted to be a basketball player, and then the mom wanted a vampire and the dad wanted the joker!

I had fun trying to fit it all together. I told them that batman was going to save the naive basketball player from the vampire and the joker.

This was my first vampire. I should have left her completely white. She wanted to go for the ORIGINAL vampire-look, by the way--not the faux vampires of "Twilight"(pet peeve)!

Hmmm, and I don't know quite what a machine gun looks like.....:)

Michael Jackson in Memoriam

Yesterday the news was all over SeaWorld---Michael Jackson had died. People were on their cell phones or conversing with family and friends about his famous songs and/or life.

A nearby face-painter suggested doing a drawing of Michael Jackson, so I did.

Both graves have the incorrect birth date, about which a customer eventually corrected me. The correct date is 1959.

Starting last Saturday, the price of caricatures has been cut in half at SeaWorld. This means that we get many more customers, but less money for each. Even though this seems like it would be worse, it turns out that I get to draw way more and thus have more practice. Also, in the end, I've had higher net sales. Lately, I have needed more money to pay my rent, expenses, etc, and this is one of the ways my prayers have been answered. I tried out a new marker that had a brush end. Although it was great fun to try something new, I didn't have time to master it, so my line quality is weak. But this was one of my favorites that I did with that new marker.

I was going to close down the Pets booth, but these people said they had been waiting for me, so I felt guilty.

In the end, they were so sweet and appreciative and funny, that I was very glad I had stayed for them. This was also the best of both worlds, because I liked the drawing I had done of them as well. That doesn't happen too often--when you really like the people AND the drawing of them.
